Common questions
How does Rockford Top Rated rank businesses?
By Google rating, adjusted for how many reviews that rating is based on, using a Wilson score interval. In plain terms, a strong rating earned over many reviews beats a perfect rating earned over a handful, and a business cannot reach the top of a list on three reviews.
Do businesses pay to be ranked higher?
No. Paid placement buys a labeled Sponsored unit that sits outside the ranked list. It never moves a business up, down, into or out of a ranking. See placement rates.
Where do the ratings and review counts come from?
Retrieved directly from Google, and every listing shows the date its figures were collected. We do not write, solicit or edit reviews, and we do not calculate a rating of our own.
What towns does this site cover?
Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Belvidere and Roscoe, Illinois.
What is the New & Notable section?
Businesses rated 4.5 or higher with fewer than 15 reviews. A business with a handful of reviews cannot be fairly compared to one with hundreds, so it is shown separately instead of buried at the bottom of the ranking.
Are national franchises included alongside independent businesses?
Yes, but a franchise with a local branch is sorted below independent local businesses with a comparable rating.
Can I get my business listing corrected or removed?
Yes, through the update a listing page, or by emailing hello@n5studio.com, and it is updated or removed at no charge.
Who publishes this site?

Why this site is red
In 1978 the city put up a 30-ton steel sculpture by Alexander Liberman, built as a tribute to the metal-bending factories that Rockford ran on. People hated it. It got called the symbol of a dead downtown, came down in 1984, and went back up on the bank of the Rock River by the Auburn Street Bridge, where it still stands. It is painted in Liberman’s own red.
Forty-six years earlier the Nelson Knitting Company added a red heel to its work socks so people could tell them from the knock-offs. During the Depression people sewed those worn-out socks into toys, and that red heel became the sock monkey’s mouth. Two unrelated things, fifty years apart, and both of them red.
